Winter Prep for Ducks, Geese, and Rabbits: Staying Cozy and Efficient as Days Grow Shorter

As fall will fade into winter, the shorter days and colder nights can be a real challenge on the homestead—not just for us, but for our feathered and furry friends. This year, I’ve been focusing on keeping my ducks, geese, and Nutmeg the rabbit happy, healthy, and cozy while also streamlining my daily routines. Preparing for the colder months doesn’t have to be stressful—by taking a few thoughtful steps now, you can protect your animals, save time, and enjoy the quiet, comforting rhythm of the season.

Main Tips:

  1. Insulate Their Spaces:
For ducks and geese, I add extra straw or hay in their pens and shelters. This keeps them warm during frosty nights without trapping moisture. For Nutmeg, I make sure his hutch has a cozy bedding area with plenty of straw and a sheltered spot out of cold drafts. Insulation is key for all small animals during winter.
  2. Fresh Water Matters:
Ducks and geese can’t survive without access to fresh water, even in freezing temperatures. We use heated waterers or check multiple times a day to make sure their water doesn’t freeze. Nutmeg also needs plenty of fresh water, so I keep a small heated water bowl in his hutch to prevent him from going thirsty during the coldest days.
  3. Adjust Feeding Routines:
Shorter days mean less natural foraging for your flock. I supplement my ducks’ and geese’s diet with extra grains and nutrient-rich feed, especially during particularly cold weeks. Nutmeg also benefits from high-fiber hay and a few winter-safe vegetables, which help keep his energy up in chilly weather.
  4. Light Management:
With decreasing daylight, sometimes it helps to gently extend light in your birds’ shelter with a safe, low-wattage light. This keeps them active and, for ducks and geese that lay eggs, can help maintain production. For my rabbit, keeping a consistent routine with feeding and care helps him adjust to shorter days.
  5. Streamline Daily Chores:
Winter can make homestead chores feel more time-consuming. I’ve created a simple checklist for mornings and evenings: water checks, feeding, bedding maintenance, and a quick health check. Having a routine saves time and ensures nothing gets overlooked, even when the weather is harsh.
  6. Monitor Health Closely:
Cold, damp conditions can stress both birds and rabbits. Watch for signs of illness—like lethargy, changes in appetite, or unusual behavior—and act quickly if needed. Regular grooming and clean, dry bedding go a long way in keeping everyone healthy.
  7. Enjoy Cozy Moments:
Finally, winter is the perfect time to slow down and enjoy your homestead. Whether it’s baking with farm-fresh eggs, sipping a warm drink while watching your flock waddle through the frost, or sneaking Nutmeg a few winter veggies, these moments remind me why I love this lifestyle so much.

With a little preparation and thoughtful routines, your ducks, geese, and even your rabbit can thrive all winter long. Embrace the cozy rhythm of shorter days, and enjoy the satisfaction of a safe, happy, and well-cared-for homestead.
