More news from G’s Homestead—our little flock just got a bit fluffier! We welcomed six brand new Welsh Harlequin ducklings, and we are totally smitten. 🦆✨ These babies are known for their sweet temperaments, stunning feather patterns, and egg-laying superpowers, so we’re feeling pretty lucky to have them join the crew. We LOVE using duck eggs in baking especially, so these babies will hopefully keep our oven running nonstop with baked goodies!
Right now, the ducklings are staying separate from our four goslings and two older ducks. The size difference is just a little too much at the moment, and we want everyone to stay safe and comfortable. Once the ducklings get a bit bigger, we’ll start the slow introduction process by putting them all in the coop together with a divider. That way, they can see each other, get used to one another’s presence, and hopefully avoid any major scuffles when it’s finally time to mingle.
Let’s be honest—they’ll probably still try to duke it out and establish who’s in charge (flock politics are no joke), but this method usually helps things go more smoothly.
In the meantime, the ducklings are living their best lives in the brooder. They love getting into their water dish—splashing, sitting, and somehow managing to spill it absolutely everywhere. We’re cleaning out their brooder… a lot. But honestly, watching them waddle around all soggy and proud of themselves is pretty hilarious. Classic duckling behavior!
We can’t wait to see how they grow and what kind of dynamic they’ll bring to the rest of the flock. It’s moments like these that make the messes totally worth it.
Have you ever introduced new birds to an existing flock? I’d love to hear your tips and stories!
Until next time,
—G’s Homestead 🦆💛
