Surviving the Heat Wave: Homestead Life and Parenting in High Temps

Hey everyone! We’re deep in the middle of a serious heat wave right now, and let me tell you—it’s making homesteading and parenting a whole new kind of challenge. When the thermometer keeps climbing, everything feels harder, but life on the homestead doesn’t stop, and the little ones still need care and attention. So, how do we keep everything running smoothly without melting?

Hydration is Everything
First and foremost, we’re doubling down on water. For the humans, that means plenty of cool drinks, lots of shade breaks, and frozen treats when possible. For the animals—ducks, geese, and even our Rex rabbit—fresh, cool water is constantly replenished. I’ve been setting out extra water bowls in shady spots so everyone can stay hydrated and comfortable.

Adjusting the Daily Rhythm
Heat makes midday work almost impossible. So, the early mornings and late evenings have become our golden hours. I get up with the sun to tend the garden, check on the animals, and get chores done before the heat kicks in. Parenting during this time means planning indoor activities or quiet downtime for the kids in the afternoon when it’s too hot to be outside.

Keeping the Homestead Cool
We’re using every trick in the book to keep our animals cool. I mist the coop and shaded areas, spread straw bedding to help insulate against hot ground, and even rig up fans or damp cloths when needed. All animals have been getting frozen fruits that are about to expire for human eating. For my little ones, keeping them out of direct sunlight and dressing them in light, breathable fabrics has helped a lot. The little one and I are mainly indoors right now.

Creative Indoor Parenting
When the heat is relentless, we get creative with indoor activities. This is a perfect time to do some embroidery projects (a passion passed down from my grandma!), read books, or start a new craft. It keeps the kids entertained and out of the sun while still feeling productive and connected to our homestead lifestyle. Sensory projects, toys all over the house, and creative thinking are our tops right now for ‘indoor only’ play.

Lessons from the Heat
This heat wave is a reminder of the resilience and adaptability needed in homestead life. We honor our ancestors who farmed and raised families through all kinds of weather. It’s also a great reminder to slow down and listen to our bodies… and our animals’ needs, especially when nature throws a curveball.

Looking Ahead
We’re watching the weather closely and planning to plant heat-tolerant crops once the worst of this passes. Meanwhile, I’m grateful for our little community here, sharing tips, and supporting each other through this sticky season.
