The duck coop is really starting to take shape. It’s been a steady process, but we’ve officially crossed some major items off the list, and the structure is finally looking like a real home for the flock.
What’s Done So Far
- Siding is Up
We’ve got all the siding installed, and it immediately made the whole coop feel more solid and weather-ready. It’s a big step forward, and honestly, it gave the whole build a nice, clean look. - Windows Installed
The windows are in, which will bring in some natural light and keep airflow moving. Good ventilation is key for keeping things dry and healthy inside—especially once bedding and ducks are involved. - Door Framed
The main door has been framed out, and we’ll finish installing it soon. We’re going to need to build something more custom, as the entrance isn’t exactly a standard door size. Once it’s in, getting in and out for cleaning and feeding will be a whole lot easier. - Roof On
Huge relief—there’s a roof over their heads now. It feels good knowing the coop is sealed off from the elements as we finish the interior.
Still on the To-Do List
- Cut and Install the Duck Door
This is one of the next priorities. The ducks will need their own entrance and exit for when they’re free-ranging during the day. - Waterproof Paint
We’ll be painting the inside with a waterproof sealant to help protect the wood and make cleaning easier down the line. Still deciding on color, but function comes first here. - Vinyl Flooring
Once the paint’s cured, we’ll lay down some vinyl flooring. It’ll make maintenance easier and help the coop last longer. - Interior Setup
Nesting areas, bedding, and maybe a few finishing touches—then it’ll be ready for the ducks to move in.
Photo Highlights
Here’s a look at what we’ve accomplished so far:

Each step makes the space feel more real and more ready for its new residents. The ducks have been watching us build like little project managers, so I’m sure they’re just as ready to settle into their new space as we are to finish it. We’re so excited that you’re coming along with us and can’t wait for the ducks to call the new coop their home.
More soon in the next entry of the Duck Coop Diaries.
